IN-HOUSE STAFF DEVELOPMENT
The
usual method
to discipline is
by using the "Carrot and Stick"
approach of rewards and
punishments.
This
external
approach of manipulation and
coercion aims at obedience,
but
obedience does not create
desire.
By contrast, if students are
motivated to be
responsible,
obedience
follows as a natural by-product.
Young people want to be
responsible,
but we are using wrong
approaches to help them.
Learn how to use
internal
motivation to promote
both
responsibility and learning
by employing concepts of
Stephen
Covey (proaction),
William
Glasser (nocoercion),
W.
Edwards Deming
(collaboration), and
Abraham
Maslow (hierarchy and
self-reliance).
The approach can be used in
any school or home,
at any grade level, and with any
subject area.
